I
I grew up in the South—what some people affectionately call the
“Bible belt.” I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior
at age 19 years old after a long period of feeling lonely and unfulfilled
as an agnostic. Since then, I have sought His guidance and direction in
my life, both personally and professionally. I consider myself a non-denominational
Christian, although I recognize I have been strongly influenced by my
church of Christ background.
I felt a strong desire and sense of calling to become a psychologist while
still in high school. After graduating with my BS in psychology (2002)
from Arkansas State University, I moved to Utah for graduate school. I
earned my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Brigham Young University in
2008. I completed my year of pre-doctoral internship at the Utah State
Hospital. I am now licensed as a Psychologist in the State of Utah.
I joined CCCU staff in September 2008. The services I provide range from
short-term interventions (such as short-term psychotherapy, psychoeducation,
and psychological assessments) to long-term psychotherapy. I approach
clients in a holistic manner, addressing thoughts, feelings, behaviors,
biology, and spirituality. I am currently working part-time at CCCU, and
my roster is generally full. However, you are welcome to contact me to
see whether I have any openings.
A few people have come to me so I could help them change the way they
see themselves and their lives. Through treatment, they essentially gained
tools to cope with life and to strengthen their relationships with other
people. For example, when one man was dealing with the death of a loved
one, I helped him find the meaning in his loss. When a woman was having
marital difficulties, we discussed communication skills, and ways of being
open and honest without feeling too vulnerable.
Others have come to me with lifelong concerns, and we work through these
issues together one day at a time. Many of my long-term clients have experienced
traumatic events. Traumatic events can alter how a person views the world,
and treatment often focuses on helping my clients experience their lives
as safe and fulfilling.
